The year was 1981 and Frank Sopata was president of IABC Detroit. At a Board meeting, Marlene Goldsmith was late arriving and when she did she found that she was charged with designing and chairing an awards competition – and Renaissance Awards was born.
The program has seen many changes over the years, but the one that best defines it occurred in 1992. Recognizing a need to create a brand image for the program, Pangborn Design was enlisted for help. A team of designers, led by then vice president of design and creative director Ted Zablocki, worked to depart from the original Detroit skyline visual, that the chapter used, to create a renaissance theme.

Created by Burke Video in Troy, here’s what former IABC Detroit presidents had to say.
